Manchester Para Ice Hockey started in 2012, with the Formation of the Manchester Phoenix Sledge Hockey Club, part of the Manchester Phoenix Community Sports Foundation. With a mix of new players and experienced players from the area, the team slowly came together, to define the inclusive nature of the sport, with a 50/50 split between disabled and able bodied players.
In 2017, the Manchester Phoenix organisation ceased operations and the team was on the sledge team was at a crossroads, cease operations itself, or continue. With the easiest option to disband and players play for the remaining teams, the vote was unanimous…Manchester would continue. With just under 2 months to arrange ice for training and games, new identity and jerseys, somehow the team pulled it off and the Manchester Mayhem was born!
Their first season was tough, just about keeping themselves on the ice, with injuries and almost starting a roster from scratch, they finished 3rd in the British Para Ice Hockey League, but the best was yet to come! Despite facing the undefeated League Champions in the Semi Finals, they prevailed in a nail biting 3-2 victory were rewarded with a Final against the Cardiff Huskies, the 2nd placed team in the League. The Mayhem shut out the Huskies, winning 5-0 with the club winning the 2017 British Para Ice Hockey Play Offs, its first ever silverware.
The Mayhem followed that up with a second place finish in the British Para Ice Hockey League and Semi Final place in the Play Offs, where the Huskies got revenge, beating the Mayhem and going on to win the Final.
The current Mayhem squad have a good mix of GB players and new starters, with several players rising up through the ranks from beginner to making the GB squad, they hope that they can recruit and challenge for Silverware again in 2019 & re-establish Para Ice Hockey in the local community once more.
